Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, pointed out the three core visions of the Smart School Flagship Application during the Launching of Multimedia Super Corridor on 1st August 1996.
The visions are as follows:
1. Teachers will need to change their role in the electronic classroom from being information providers to counselors to help students develop know how and judgement to select information sources.
2. Key to success in the Information Age will be making the right judgement between an awesome array of choices.
3. We are examining our education system to create a curriculum where people learn how to learn for continuing education throughout their lives.
OBJECTIVES
The Smart School is a learning institution that has been reinvented in terms of teaching and learning methods and school administration system in order to prepare the students for the Information-Based Society. Creativity and better management of information is facilitated through the use of technology where students, teachers, administrators and parents are better prepared for the challenges of the information Age.
The objectives of the Smart School, which are based on Malaysia's National Philosophy of Education, are as follows:
• To produce a thinking and technology-literate workforce
• To democratize education
• To increase participation of stakeholders.
• To provide all-round development of the individual
• To provide opportunities to enhance individual strengths and abilities
BACKGROUND
About The Malaysian Smart School
The Malaysian Smart School Flagship was premised on the strong belief that information and communication technology is a key enabler to imparting the learning desire to all. The impact of technology on education and future generations is undoubtedly enormous. The Smart School Flagship is one of the seven flagship applications envisaged under the Multimedia Super Corridor initiative.
It was implemented on a Pilot basis between 1999 and 2002. Deemed one of the most forward-looking ICT-mediated learning initiatives in the world, the Smart School Flagship attempts to reinvent the teaching-learning processes.
In the Pilot, the Smart School Integrated Solution (SSIS) was rolled out to 87 schools in the country at the cost of about USD78 million (RM300 million). The Smart School project is implemented by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Malaysia. The industry partner is Telekom Smart School (TSS) that was awarded the contract to develop the project in collaboration with the MoE and the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC).

Smart school is one of the way to achieve the target in Wawasan 2020 that had been introduced by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad. Smart school in a simply manner is the school which is equip with ICT technologies. Nowdays, ICT application have become an important part of teaching and learning. MSC or Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor is the main supporter of the inception Smart School in Malaysia. Because of all this, all primary school and secondary school in Malaysia will be Smart School by 2010.
However, there is a lot of issues and challenges in integrating ICT in teaching and learning in our Malaysian School. From my opinion, one of the challenges that government have to face is the cost that needed in order to make smart school in Malaysia become reality. The cost that need is not in thousand in number, but in million or more than that. That is a big and high cost actually. Let us imagine, in one school, there is around 7 class per form. If one class cost around 20 thousand ringgit, now times it with 7. It is a high cost right? In order to make one school become a smart school, the government have to support one school around 70000 ringgit. For me, this is too wasting the money and the government can used that money to support the unlucky citizen out there.
Moreover, the another challenges we have to face to deployment Smart School is problem integrating with existing computer system. As we know, not all people know how to handle the computer or anything device related to them. Especially the teacher who is senior in teaching in that school. From here, once again, the government have to spent a lot of money in order to give classes for those teacher who is blind in ICT. If the teachers still not used computer in their teaching, this is very wasting the time and money. The reason why this teacher not used ICT in their teaching is they think when used ICT, a lot of time is waste. This is because to set up the computer devise, it takes at least 10 or 20 minutes. Actually, the time for lesson in school is two period which is around one and half hour. But, if 20 minutes already spent to set up the computer devise, teacher might have difficulty to finish all the syllabus in that subject. In addition, the computer software also have to update year by year. This is because, technologies development is very fast and all that software in computer must be updated in order to run smoothly. Otherwise, many program cannot be used. From here, we can see the weakness of technologies. Sometimes, the computer devise also have to change in order to follow the technologies development. This happen causes by a new software come, not all computer devise can run it. So, the way to solve this problem is by changing the computer devise. This take a lot money to spent and the victim of this problem is our country.
